What do Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Physicians do?

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Medicine Physicians, also known as Physiatrists, coordinate comprehensive rehabilitation for individuals with spinal cord injuries, focusing on restoring function and quality of life.

They lead multidisciplinary teams to manage acute and long-term complications like pain, spasticity, pressure sores, and cardiovascular or respiratory issues.

Their role involves creating personalized treatment plans, prescribing adaptive equipment like wheelchairs, and educating patients and families to promote independence and productivity after injury.

What they do

Treatment Coordination: They serve as the central point for the rehabilitation team, which includes physical and occupational therapists, nurses, psychologists, and social workers.

Functional Assessment: Conduct comprehensive functional assessments to identify a patient’s neurologic level and set appropriate functional goals.

Complication Management: Anticipate, diagnose, and treat complications arising from SCI, such as respiratory problems, cardiovascular issues, spasticity, pressure sores, bowel and bladder dysfunction, and psychological disorders.

Equipment Prescription: Prescribe and manage the use of essential durable medical equipment, assistive devices, and prostheses.

Rehabilitation Planning: Develop and oversee a patient’s comprehensive, multidisciplinary rehabilitation plan to maximize recovery and functional independence.

Patient and Family Education: Educate patients and their families about the injury and care plan, empowering them to manage their health and navigate the recovery process.

Long-Term Medical Management: Provide lifelong medical management, addressing ongoing needs and striving to maintain health and quality of life for individuals with SCI.

Research and Advocacy: Some SCI Medicine Physicians conduct research to develop new treatments and cures, and advocate for their patients’ needs.
