What do Surgical Physician Assistants do?
A Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) works with a surgeon to care for patients before, during, and after a surgical procedure.
Responsibilities include preparing patients, providing exposure to the surgical site, handling instruments, assisting with techniques such as suturing and cauterization, and monitoring patients during their recovery.
Surgical PAs require a master’s degree from an accredited program, national certification, state licensure, strong teamwork skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
What they do
Preoperative Care: PAs examine patients, review medical history, and help prepare them for surgery.
Intraoperative Assistance: During surgery, a Surgical PA acts as a first assistant, performing tasks such as providing exposure to the surgical site, handling instruments, and assisting with wound closure.
Postoperative Care: They monitor the patient’s recovery, manage pain, check wound healing, and oversee rehabilitation as patients are discharged.
Training and Education
Education: A master’s degree from a PA program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) is required.
Certification: After graduation, PAs must pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE).
Licensure: State licensure is necessary to practice as a PA.
Skills: Beyond technical skills, Surgical PAs need strong teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills to work effectively in a surgical environment.
