What do Surgical Technologists do?

Surgical technologists prepare patients and operating rooms for surgery, maintain a sterile environment, and provide instruments and equipment to surgeons during procedures.

They assist with preoperative tasks, such as patient preparation and instrument sterilization, participate in the surgery by handing tools to the surgeon and managing equipment, and help with postoperative care, including applying bandages and transporting patients.

Before Surgery

Prepare the Operating Room: Surgical technologists set up the operating room with necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies.

Ensure Sterility: They sterilize all equipment and maintain a sterile field to prevent infection.

Prepare the Patient: This includes assisting the patient onto the operating table and disinfecting the surgical site.

During Surgery

Instrument and Supply Management: They hand surgical instruments and other sterile supplies to the surgeon as needed.

Maintain Patient Safety: Surgical technologists help protect the patient by counting all instruments, sponges, and other materials before and after surgery.

Assist the Surgeon: They may hold retractors or internal organs in place to help the surgeon during the procedure.

Specimen Handling: They collect tissue and fluid samples, place them in sterile containers, and ensure they are correctly labeled and documented.

After Surgery

Clean and Restock: They clean and restock the operating room with supplies for the following procedure.

Apply Dressings: They help apply bandages to the patient’s incision site.

Assist in Patient Transfer: Surgical technologists assist in moving patients from the operating room to the recovery area.
