Surgical technologists prepare patients and operating rooms for surgery, assist surgeons by passing instruments and sterile supplies during procedures, and help with post-operative tasks like closing wounds and cleaning the OR.

They ensure a sterile environment, anticipate the surgeon’s needs, and maintain equipment to facilitate smooth surgical operations.

Hold retractors: Depending on the procedure, they may hold surgical retractors or hold a patient’s organs in place.

Maintain sterility: A critical role is to maintain a sterile environment to prevent patient infection.

Count supplies: They meticulously count instruments and supplies to ensure that no foreign objects are left inside the patient after surgery.

After Surgery

Apply dressings: They help apply dressings to the patient’s wounds.

Transfer the patient: They assist in transferring the patient to the recovery room.

Clean and restock: They clean the operating room and restock it with necessary supplies for future procedures.
