The diagram below shows all the Healthcare Students across the country, represented by blue bubbles. The larger the bubble, the greater the concentration of providers in that area. Red bubbles represent Medicare-excluded providers, with the larger bubbles indicating a higher percentage of excluded providers in that region. You can change the bubble size to be based on exclusions from the Size menu.
Students, interns, and residents involved in patient care and specific educational activities are required to obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number.
During the NPI application process, trainees who are not yet fully licensed providers must identify themselves as a “Student in an Organized Health Care Education/Training Program” using the healthcare taxonomy code 390200000X.
This is intended to be a temporary code assignment. Once the trainee becomes a fully licensed provider, they must update their information in the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) with their new license and primary specialty taxonomy code.
The five most popular healthcare specialties in the NPPES are Behavior Technicians, Mental Health Counselors, Clinical Social Workers, Physical Therapists, and Pharmacists.
