What do Respite Care Facilities do?

Respite care facilities provide temporary, short-term relief for primary caregivers by offering a safe environment where individuals can receive necessary support and supervision. 

This allows the primary caregiver to take a break for personal appointments, to rest, or to handle other responsibilities, preventing caregiver fatigue and burnout. 

Services can be provided for a few hours, a few days, or even several weeks.  

To ensure the person receiving care has access to a safe and secure environment with professional support, a comprehensive plan must be implemented. 

Services offered

Personal care, such as assistance with bathing, dressing, and grooming 

Household assistance, including meal preparation and light housekeeping 

Companionship and planned activities 

Medication administration and incontinence management 

Environment

In-home: A professional caregiver can provide support in the individual’s own home. 

Facility-based: Care can be provided at a respite facility, adult day care center, or other residential setting. 

Purpose

To give the primary caregiver a needed break to rest, recharge, and attend to their own needs, a plan should be implemented. 

To provide social interaction and engagement for the person receiving care.
