What do Registered Nurse Lactation Consultants do?

Registered Nurse Lactation Consultants (RN-LCs) provide expert support, education, and clinical guidance to families on breastfeeding, helping parents overcome challenges, promote maternal and infant health, and achieve their feeding goals.

They offer hands-on assistance with latch and positioning, teach hunger cues, manage milk supply, address potential medical complications, and support maternal mental health.

What they do

Education & Prenatal Preparation: They offer classes and consultations to prepare expectant parents for breastfeeding, covering topics such as how breastfeeding works, milk supply management, and breast care.

Clinical Breastfeeding Support:

  • Latching & Positioning: They help parents establish a good latch, which is crucial for adequate feeding and comfort.
  • Feeding Plans: RN LCs help families develop personalized feeding plans and schedules.
  • Milk Supply Management: They provide guidance on increasing, decreasing, or maintaining milk supply.
  • Baby’s Growth: They monitor the baby’s weight and growth to ensure the baby is getting enough milk.

Problem-Solving: They address common breastfeeding challenges, such as engorgement, difficulty latching, and pumping issues.

Medical & Health Integration:

  • Medical Complications: An RN LC’s nursing background enables them to more effectively identify medical complications in mothers or infants that may impact breastfeeding.
  • Maternal Mental Health: They screen for and provide support for maternal mental health issues like postpartum depression and anxiety, as these can significantly affect breastfeeding success.

Advocacy & Support: They advocate for parents’ breastfeeding goals and provide emotional support to new parents.
