What do Psychiatrists do?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat mental health disorders through a combination of therapy, medication, and other medical interventions.

They assess patients, review medical histories, conduct tests, and prescribe medication to help manage symptoms. Psychiatrists also provide psychotherapy (talk therapy) and can work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, and private practices.

What they do

Specialization: Some psychiatrists specialize in specific areas, such as child and adolescent psychiatry, forensic psychiatry (working with the legal system), or geriatric psychiatry (caring for older adults).

Diagnosis: Psychiatrists use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to diagnose mental health conditions after a thorough assessment.

Medication management: As medical doctors, they can prescribe and monitor medications to alleviate symptoms of mental illnesses, carefully assessing effectiveness and side effects.

Psychotherapy: They provide psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, and may use different approaches such as psychoanalysis or general counseling.

Medical and psychological testing: They can order and interpret a range of tests, including physical exams, blood tests, and brain imaging, to provide a comprehensive picture of a patient’s health.

Treatment planning: They develop comprehensive treatment plans that may combine medication, therapy, and other interventions to create a tailored approach for each patient.

Collaboration: They work with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive patient care.
