A plastic surgery nurse specializes in caring for patients undergoing plastic surgery procedures. 

Plastic surgery nurses require strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. 

They must also be detail-oriented, compassionate, and adaptable to the dynamic nature of surgical environments. 

What they do

Preoperative Care

  • Assessing the patient’s medical history and current health
  • Educating patients about the procedure, risks, and recovery process
  • Obtaining informed consent
  • Preparing the patient for surgery, including administering medications and monitoring vital signs

Intraoperative Care

  • The tasks include assisting the surgeon during surgery, managing the patient’s vital signs, monitoring for complications, and providing wound care and hemostasis. 

Postoperative Care

  • Monitoring the patient’s pain, vital signs, and drainage
  • Educating patients on wound care, medication administration, and activity restrictions
  • Providing emotional support and addressing any concerns
  • Scheduling follow-up appointments for evaluation and suture removal

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performing cosmetic procedures, such as Botox injections and fillers 
  • Managing patient records and documentation 
  • Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, such as surgeons, anesthesiologists, and therapists 
  • Staying up-to-date on the latest advancements in plastic surgery techniques and nursing practice
