What do Emergency Medicine Pediatricians do?

Emergency medicine pediatricians are specialists who provide immediate medical care to acutely ill or injured infants, children, and adolescents in a hospital emergency department.

They treat a wide range of conditions, from minor injuries and illnesses to life-threatening emergencies like asthma attacks, serious infections, major trauma, and allergic reactions, using specialized knowledge and techniques tailored to children.

Their work also involves using age-appropriate equipment and medication dosages, providing emotional support for families, and sometimes conducting research and education.

What they do

Treating acute illnesses and injuries: They manage conditions that require immediate attention, such as respiratory distress, severe infections, and traumatic injuries like fractures and head injuries.

Managing critical situations: They are trained to handle life-threatening emergencies, including advanced airway management, resuscitation, and stabilization for critically ill children.

Applying child-specific care: They provide treatment using specialized equipment and medication dosages tailored to the unique needs of infants, children, or adolescents.

Providing emotional and psychological support: They work to ease the pain and anxiety children and their families experience during a medical emergency.

Addressing a variety of conditions: They care for a wide array of problems, including burns, poisonings, surgical emergencies, and sometimes psychiatric emergencies and suspected child abuse.

Training

They are certified by either the American Board of Pediatrics or the American Board of Emergency Medicine as specialists in pediatric emergency medicine.

Emergency medicine pediatricians complete medical school, residency training in either pediatrics or emergency medicine, and then a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine.
