What do MOHS-Micrographic Surgery Physicians do?
MOHS-Micrographic Surgery physicians are specially trained dermatologists who meticulously remove high-risk skin cancers by excising the tumor layer by layer, with each layer immediately examined under a microscope to ensure that all cancer cells are removed while sparing as much healthy tissue as possible.
This precise method offers the highest cure rates and is used for cancers in cosmetically sensitive areas, such as the face, head, neck, and hands.
- Perform a Precise Excision: The surgeon removes the visible portion of the skin cancer, along with a thin margin of surrounding tissue.
- Map the Tissue: The removed tissue is carefully mapped to identify precisely where the cancer cells were located on the surgical margin.
- Microscopic Examination: The surgical specimen is processed and examined under a microscope by the Mohs surgeon, who is a trained pathologist, to check for cancer cells at the edges.
- Repeat the Process: If any cancer cells are found at the edges, the surgeon removes another layer of tissue only from those specific areas, repeating the process until all cancer is gone.
- Reconstruct the Defect: Once all cancerous cells are removed, the resulting defect is repaired to minimize the scar and make it as inconspicuous as possible.
When is Mohs Surgery Recommended?
- High-Risk Cancers: Cancers in cosmetically and functionally critical areas like the face, ears, nose, and lips.
- Aggressive Cancers: Large Tumors have indistinct edges or are growing rapidly.
- Recurrent Cancers: Skin cancers that have grown back after previous treatment.
- Common Types: Primarily basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), but also used for some melanomas.
