What do Maternal & Fetal Medicine Physicians do?

Maternal and Fetal Medicine (MFM) physicians, also called perinatologists, specialize in diagnosing, treating, and managing high-risk pregnancies.

They care for women with pre-existing chronic health conditions or those who develop complications during pregnancy, such as high blood pressure, early labor, or birth defects.

Their services include advanced ultrasounds, genetic counseling, pre-conception care, and management of both the mother’s and baby’s health before, during, and after delivery.

What they do

Consult with other doctors: They work alongside a pregnant person’s primary OB/GYN and other specialists to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care.

Provide care for high-risk pregnancies: MFM specialists are experts in pregnancies where the mother, baby, or both are at risk for complications.

Manage maternal health conditions: They help manage pre-existing conditions like heart disease, kidney transplants, diabetes, and high blood pressure, and monitor how these affect pregnancy.

Diagnose and treat fetal conditions: They use specialized tests like ultrasounds, amniocentesis, and chorionic villus sampling to screen for genetic disorders, birth defects, and growth problems in the fetus. They can also provide treatment for certain fetal conditions.

Monitor multiple pregnancies: They provide specialized care for pregnancies involving twins or other multiples.

Offer pre-conception and post-delivery care: They provide preconception counseling and care for complications after delivery, such as excessive bleeding or infections.
