What do Local Education Agencies do?

Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) are the public entities, such as school districts, responsible for the direct administration and operation of public elementary and secondary schools within a community or state.

Their primary duties include implementing federal and state education policies, developing local curricula, allocating resources, managing budgets, and ensuring that programs, especially special education services for students with disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), are provided effectively.

What they do

Policy Implementation: LEAs translate federal and state education policies into practical programs and ensure compliance at the local level.

Curriculum and Instruction: They are involved in developing and adapting curriculum to meet the specific needs of their students and communities.

Resource Allocation: LEAs manage and allocate resources, including budgets and personnel, to support educational programs and initiatives.

Special Education Services: They are primarily responsible for implementing IDEA mandates, providing and monitoring special education programs and related services for students with disabilities.

Teacher Training: LEAs organize and provide professional development and training for teachers to enhance their skills and ensure effective policy implementation.

Community Engagement: They collaborate with schools, families, and community partners to support student learning and address local educational needs.

Data Management: LEAs track and report data related to student attendance, academic performance, and other indicators to inform decision-making and improve outcomes.
