What do EEG Specialists/Technologists do?

EEG Specialists/Technologists perform and monitor electroencephalogram (EEG) tests to record brain’s electrical activity, assist in diagnosing neurological conditions, and monitor patients during surgery or in comas. 

Their duties include preparing and applying electrodes, operating the EEG equipment, managing and troubleshooting it, monitoring the recording, preparing patients, and providing data for physician interpretation to help diagnose conditions like epilepsy, stroke, and sleep disorders.  

Responsibilities

Performing EEG Tests: Setting up, performing, and monitoring EEG tests that record the electrical activity of the brain. 

Equipment Management: Operating, calibrating, and maintaining specialized EEG equipment to ensure it is in good working order. 

Patient Interaction: Preparing patients for the procedure, explaining the process to ease anxiety, and ensuring their comfort and proper positioning. 

Data Monitoring and Recording: Continuously monitoring the brain’s electrical activity during the test and recording data for later analysis. 

Collaboration: Working closely with neurologists, neurosurgeons, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive patient care. 

Specialized Procedures: Performing other neurodiagnostic procedures like polysomnograms (sleep studies) and evoked potential tests. 

Goal of the Role

To monitor brain activity during complex surgical procedures. 

To provide accurate and actionable neurological data to help diagnose and monitor neurological disorders such as epilepsy, stroke, and neurodegenerative diseases. 

To monitor brain function in critically ill patients, including those in comas.
