What do Basic Emergency Medical Technicians do?

Basic Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are responsible for responding to emergency calls, assessing patient conditions, and providing basic life support and first aid to stabilize patients before transporting them to a hospital.

Their duties include performing CPR, controlling bleeding, administering oxygen, and communicating with other emergency personnel to ensure patient safety and proper transfer of care.

Responsibilities

Respond to Emergencies: EMTs are often the first to arrive on the scene of an emergency, whether it’s a 911 call for a medical incident or other forms of urgent care.

Assess Patient Conditions: They perform physical exams and assessments to determine the patient’s condition and the nature of the injury or illness.

Provide Basic Life Support: This includes life-saving interventions such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), opening and maintaining airways, controlling severe bleeding, and treating shock.

Administer Basic Treatments: EMTs can administer oxygen, assist with administering some oral medications, such as activated charcoal or oral glucose, and treat minor wounds.

Transport Patients: A primary role of an EMT is to safely and efficiently transport patients by ambulance or other emergency vehicles to a healthcare facility.

Communicate Effectively: They must clearly communicate with dispatchers, other emergency responders, and hospital staff, providing vital information to ensure continuity of care.

Document Care: EMTs are responsible for keeping accurate records of the care provided and the patient’s condition for medical and administrative purposes.

Maintain Equipment: They ensure that emergency medical equipment is maintained and stocked with necessary supplies.

Environment

EMTs work in a demanding and sometimes physically challenging environment, requiring strength and stamina for lifting and moving patients.

They operate in various settings, including ambulances, fire departments, and rescue squads.
