What do Allergists do?

An allergist is a medical professional who specializes in diagnosing and treating allergies and immune disorders, providing comprehensive care to improve patients’ quality of life. 

Diagnosis

  • Identifying and testing for allergens, such as food, pollen, pet dander, and mold 
  • Assessing immune reactions and diagnosing conditions like asthma and eczema 

Treatment

  • Prescribing medications, such as antihistamines, corticosteroids, and immunotherapy
  • Developing personalized treatment plans to manage allergies and reduce symptoms
  • Guiding avoiding allergens and managing anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions)

Other Responsibilities

  • Monitoring patients’ progress and adjusting treatment as needed 
  • Coordinating care with other healthcare professionals, such as primary care physicians and pulmonologists
