What do Acupuncturists do?

Acupuncturists use long, fine needles inserted into specific points to relieve pain, induce anesthesia, and treat some diseases.

Licensed Acupuncturist vs. Doctor of Acupuncture

A licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac) is a professional trained and licensed to practice acupuncture and Oriental medicine.

A Doctor of Acupuncture has earned an advanced academic degree in the field, such as a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) or an Oriental Medicine Doctor (OMD).

A Doctor of Acupuncture is considered a specialist in East Asian medicine. They are not a medical doctor (MD or DO) unless they hold that qualification as well.

“Doctor” Title

The use of the title “Doctor” for an acupuncturist depends on their specific credentials and the location where they practice.

A practitioner with a D.Ac or DAOM degree from an accredited institution can use a doctoral title.

A licensed acupuncturist who does not hold an advanced academic degree cannot use “Doctor” without a general medical qualification, as this could lead to legal issues.

Medical Doctors (MDs), Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs), or Podiatrists may obtain additional certification or licensure to practice acupuncture.

These are medical doctors who incorporate acupuncture into their Western medical practice rather than primarily practicing traditional Eastern medicine.

Regulation

State boards regulate who can practice acupuncture, and requirements vary by State.

Some states require acupuncturists to hold a license and meet specific educational and examination standards.
