Wisconsin Exclusion Screening Requirements
The HHS Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) has the authority to exclude individuals and entities from participation in Medicare, Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and all Federal health care programs as defined in section 1128B(f) of the Social Security Act (the Act).
Federal regulations require State Plans for Medical Assistance establish and implement statewide controls to safeguard against unnecessary or inappropriate utilization of healthcare services and payments.
Wisconsin follows federal law, meaning providers convicted of Medicare/Medicaid fraud, patient abuse, or felony drug offenses are excluded from all federal programs, including Medicaid.
Wisconsin does not maintain a State exclusion list; nevertheless, providers must screen for excluded individuals participating in or applying to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs by searching the following exclusion lists monthly to ensure existing employees or contractors, and new hires, have not been excluded from participation:
- Health & Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE)
- General Services Administration (GSA) System for Award Management (SAM)
