Medicare Exclusions

The following are the total number of Students in an Organized Healthcare Education program who accept Medicare in your State, the number who have opted out of Medicare, and the total number excluded from Medicare nationwide.

Providers excluded by the OIG or terminated by a State Medicaid Agency cannot participate in federally funded healthcare programs. This includes Medicaid, TRICARE, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Additionally, the CMS or a State Medicaid Agency can revoke billing privileges, prohibiting the provider from participating in Medicare.

The diagram below shows all the Healthcare Students across the country, represented by blue bubbles. The larger the bubble, the greater the concentration of providers in that area. Red bubbles represent Medicare-excluded providers, with the larger bubbles indicating a higher percentage of excluded providers in that region. You can change the bubble size to be based on exclusions from the Size menu.

Student NPI Requirement

Students, interns, and residents involved in patient care and specific educational activities must obtain an NPI number.

Trainees must identify themselves with the taxonomy code 390200000X “Student in an Organized Health Care Education/Training Program”.

This is intended to be a temporary code assignment. The provider must update their license and primary specialty taxonomy code in the NPPES once fully licensed.
