What do Acupuncturists do?
An acupuncturist is a person who performs ancient therapy for the alleviation of pain, anesthesia, and the treatment of some diseases.
Acupuncturists use long, fine needles inserted into specific points to treat painful conditions or induce anesthesia.
A Doctor of Acupuncture is considered a specialist in the field of East Asian medicine, but they are not a medical doctor (such as an MD or DO) unless they hold that qualification as well.
Licensed acupuncturists with an earned doctorate degree from an accredited institution of acupuncture or Oriental medicine can use titles like O.M.D. or DAOM, indicating they have achieved a terminal academic degree in their field.
Key distinctions
Licensed Acupuncturist vs. Doctor of Acupuncture: A licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.) is a professional trained and licensed to practice acupuncture and Oriental medicine. A Doctor of Acupuncture has earned an advanced academic degree in the field, such as a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) or an Oriental Medicine Doctor (OMD).
“Doctor” Title Usage: The use of the title “Doctor” for an acupuncturist depends on their specific credentials and the location where they practice.
A practitioner with a D.Ac. or DAOM degree from an accredited institution can use a doctoral title.
A licensed acupuncturist who does not hold an advanced academic degree cannot use “Doctor” without a general medical qualification, as this could lead to legal issues.
Medical Doctors (MDs) who practice acupuncture: Some medical doctors, D.O.s (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine), or podiatrists may obtain additional certification or licensure to practice acupuncture. These are medical doctors who incorporate acupuncture into their Western medical practice, rather than primarily being practitioners of traditional Eastern medicine.
Regulation: State boards regulate who can practice acupuncture, and requirements vary by state. Some states require acupuncturists to hold a license and meet specific educational and examination standards.
