What do Gastroenterology Physicians do?

Gastroenterologists, also known as gastroenterology physicians, diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases of the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and bile ducts.

They perform procedures like endoscopies and colonoscopies to visualize the GI tract and manage conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), GERD, and liver diseases.

What they do

Diagnose and Treat Conditions: Gastroenterologists identify and manage a wide range of digestive disorders, from everyday issues like constipation and indigestion to complex diseases.

Perform Procedures: They conduct diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, such as:

  • Endoscopy: Using a flexible tube with a camera to examine the upper GI tract.
  • Colonoscopy: Using a similar instrument to examine the colon.

Provide Preventive Care: They offer screenings and patient education, which are crucial for early detection and prevention of conditions such as colon cancer.

Manage Specific Diseases: They treat chronic conditions, including IBS, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), GERD, pancreatitis, and various liver diseases.
