What do Doulas do?
Doulas provide continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to birthing people and their families during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period, acting as non-medical advocates for the client’s needs and birth plan.
Their support includes comfort measures, reassurance, education about the birth process, help with birth plans, and connection to community resources, but they do not perform medical tasks.
Before Labor (Antepartum Doulas)
Education and Guidance: Provide information on childbirth, newborn care, and the birthing process.
Birth Plan Development: Assist families in creating a personalized birth plan and exploring their options to ensure a tailored approach to their childbirth experience.
Emotional Support: Offer comfort and guidance for high-risk pregnancies or challenging pregnancy experiences.
Community Resources: Link families to relevant community-based resources and support groups.
During Labor and Birth
Continuous Presence: Provide constant, one-on-one support throughout labor.
Emotional Support: Offer reassurance, comfort, and a non-judgmental presence to help manage stress and anxiety.
Physical Support: Guide clients through breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and offer physical comfort.
Advocacy: Help clients advocate for themselves and their birth plans by clearly communicating needs to the medical team.
Partner Support: Support the birth partner and family by providing reassurance and allowing them to rest when needed.
After Birth (Postpartum Doulas)
Resource Connection: Offer information and referrals for postpartum depression, parenting groups, and other necessary services.
Lactation Support: Provide guidance and support for breastfeeding.
Practical Help: Offer assistance with basic tasks, such as caring for the baby, light housekeeping, and meal preparation.
Emotional Support: Listen to new parents, provide a safe space for them to process their birth experience, and offer emotional support.
