What do Urgent Care Clinics/Centers do?

Urgent care clinics provide walk-in treatment for non-life-threatening illnesses and minor injuries that require prompt attention but aren’t severe enough for an emergency room.

They fill a gap between primary care and the ER, offering convenient care for conditions like colds, flu, sprains, minor cuts, and infections, often with extended hours and on-site diagnostic services like X-rays.

What urgent care clinics offer

Treatment for non-life-threatening conditions: They handle common ailments such as fevers, colds, coughs, sinus infections, minor burns, and skin rashes.

Care for minor injuries: Services include treatment for sprains, strains, minor cuts, and small fractures.

Diagnostic services: Many centers offer on-site X-rays for injuries and laboratory tests for conditions such as the flu or strep throat.

Convenient access: Clinics are walk-in facilities, meaning no appointments are required, and they typically offer extended hours, including evenings and weekends.

Vaccinations: Flu shots and other routine vaccinations may be available.

When to choose urgent care

Your primary care provider is unavailable: Urgent care is ideal when your regular doctor’s office is closed or cannot schedule an appointment in a timely manner.

A medical issue that can’t wait: You need prompt care for a condition that requires attention within 24 hours but is not an actual emergency.

When to go to the Emergency Room instead

Chronic medical problems: Urgent care centers typically do not provide long-term care for chronic conditions.

Severe or life-threatening conditions: An emergency room is for serious illnesses or injuries such as severe abdominal pain, signs of stroke, uncontrolled bleeding, or major broken bones.
