What do Adult Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialists do?

Adult Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialists (PMH-CNSs) are advanced practice registered nurses who have specialized graduate-level education in mental health.

Their role includes assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental health disorders through direct patient care, psychotherapy, and potentially medication management.

PMH-CNSs also focus on educating other nurses, improving patient care outcomes, and contributing to nursing research and quality improvement initiatives within healthcare systems.

What they do

Direct Patient Care: Providing advanced psychiatric nursing care for individuals, families, and communities experiencing mental health challenges.

Assessment & Diagnosis: Evaluating and diagnosing psychiatric and substance use disorders.

Treatment: Delivering psychotherapy and developing individualized treatment plans.

Education: Educating nurses, patients, and their families on mental health conditions, treatments, and self-care.

Leadership: Serving as leaders in healthcare teams, improving clinical practices, and implementing evidence-based care.

Research: Participating in nursing research and using evidence-based findings to improve care.

How a PMH-CNS Differs from a Nurse Practitioner (NP)

While both are advanced practice registered nurses with similar core competencies, a PMH-CNS focuses more on a broader scope of influence, such as education, outcomes management, and system-level improvements. In contrast, a Nurse Practitioner (NP) tends to focus more on direct, individualized patient care.
