What do Critical Care Registered Respiratory Therapists do?

Critical Care Registered Respiratory Therapists (CC RRTs) manage patients with severe breathing and heart-lung conditions, operating life-support equipment such as ventilators, administering oxygen and aerosolized medications, and performing diagnostic tests, including blood gas analysis.

They are integral members of the ICU team, assessing patients, making clinical decisions, assisting with procedures such as bronchoscopy, and educating patients and their families to ensure optimal respiratory care.

Responsibilities

Patient Assessment & Diagnostics: Evaluating patients for lung function, conducting blood tests to measure oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, and assisting with diagnostic procedures.

Ventilator Management: Operating and monitoring mechanical ventilators to provide proper oxygenation and breathing support to patients who cannot breathe on their own.

Therapeutic Interventions: Administering oxygen therapy, delivering medications directly to the lungs, and performing chest physiotherapy to clear mucus from the lungs.

Advanced Care: Providing specialized gas administration (e.g., nitric oxide), monitoring hemodynamic status, and assisting with procedures like bronchoscopy.

Team Collaboration: Working closely with physicians, nurses, and other medical staff to manage complex oxygenation and ventilation disorders.

Patient & Family Education: Teaching patients and their families about their respiratory conditions, how to use life-support equipment, and preventative care strategies.

Skills & Qualities

Compassion: A deep empathy for patients and families facing critical illnesses is crucial.

Clinical Decision-Making: Essential for making real-time decisions in high-pressure critical care situations.

Advanced Skills: Requires advanced knowledge of respiratory physiology, equipment, and treatment modalities.

Environment

Intensive Care Units (ICUs): The primary work setting for CC RRTs.

Emergency Departments: Providing immediate care to patients with sudden breathing problems.

Other Settings: May also be used in neonatal/pediatric intensive care, cardiac care, surgical services, and with patients requiring long-term respiratory care.

Specialty Registered Respiratory Therapists

Educational Registered Respiratory Therapists

Healthcare Taxonomy Code 2279E1000X

The focus of patient and family education activities is to promote knowledge of the disease process, medical therapy, and self-help.

Respiratory therapists are uniquely qualified to provide this service regarding cardiopulmonary diseases and injury.

Emergency Care Registered Respiratory Therapists

Healthcare Taxonomy Code 2279E0002X

The immediate availability of diagnostic and therapeutic cardiopulmonary services is essential for the assessment and management of trauma victims, patients requiring airway management, and others requiring emergency care.

General Care Registered Respiratory Therapists

Healthcare Taxonomy Code 2279G1100X

This level of care encompasses diagnostic testing, therapeutics, monitoring, and rehabilitation for patients with disorders of the cardiopulmonary system, as well as education for the patient and their family regarding these disorders.

Geriatric Care Registered Respiratory Therapists

Healthcare Taxonomy Code 2279G0305X

Care of older patients who have age-related and/or disease-related decremental pulmonary changes.

Diagnosis and treatment are very important for this group since chronic lung disease is the primary cause of morbidity and mortality among them.

Furthermore, as this segment of the population increases, life expectancy is being extended.

Home Health Registered Respiratory Therapists

Healthcare Taxonomy Code 2279H0200X

Home care fosters individual responsibility for self-management of chronic respiratory conditions.

It includes individualized assessment-based plans of care service developed to promote safe, proper, and sustained use of prescribed respiratory therapy medications, equipment, and techniques in the home.

Neonatal/Pediatric Registered Respiratory Therapists

Healthcare Taxonomy Code 2279P3900X

The care and treatment of premature infants, newborns, and children.

This includes management of mechanical ventilation, assessment, diagnostics, and generalized respiratory treatments.

Palliative/Hospice Registered Respiratory Therapists

Healthcare Taxonomy Code 2279P3800X

A coordinated plan of care to help dying patients and their families handle the burden of terminal care.

Effective secretion management and relief of dyspnea are paramount in caring for patients with end-stage pulmonary disease.

Patient Transport Registered Respiratory Therapists

Healthcare Taxonomy Code 2279P4000X

Transport respiratory therapists provide patient assessment, initiation of treatment modalities, and ongoing monitoring of patient status for critically ill and injured patients, with a special focus on advanced airway and ventilator management.

The transport respiratory therapist’s knowledge and experience with complex neonatal, pediatric, and adult patient care issues equip them with the expertise to assist with any patient care issue in various transport modes.

Pulmonary Diagnostics Registered Respiratory Therapists

Healthcare Taxonomy Code 2279P1004X

Included in the area of pulmonary diagnostics are the following: collection and analysis of physiological specimens, interpretation of physiological data, administration of tests on the cardiopulmonary system, and conducting both neurophysiological and sleep disorders studies.

Pulmonary Function Technologist Registered Respiratory Therapists

Healthcare Taxonomy Code 2279P1006X

An individual who is trained and qualified to perform pulmonary diagnostic tests.

During the course of conducting these tests, the Pulmonary Function Technologist is responsible for setting up, calibrating, maintaining, and ensuring the quality assurance of the pulmonary function testing equipment.

In the laboratory, clinical, or patient care setting, the technologist instructs patients, elicits cooperation, performs procedures, monitors patient response, and evaluates patient performance.

Test results are calculated, compared with predicted normal ranges, and evaluated for reliability.

The technologist collects clinical history data and evaluates the clinical implications of the test results.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Registered Respiratory Therapists

Healthcare Taxonomy Code 2279P1005X

The respiratory therapist can assist the chronic pulmonary patient in returning to an optimal role in society by providing an effective program.

It includes bronchopulmonary drainage, exercise therapy, and patient education.
