What do Nutrition Support Pharmacists do?

Nutrition support pharmacists specialize in designing, preparing, and monitoring parenteral (IV) and enteral (feeding tube) nutrition for patients, ensuring they receive tailored, safe, and effective nutritional therapy.

They provide direct patient care, manage nutrition support programs, identify nutrient deficiencies, prevent complications, and collaborate with healthcare teams to optimize patients’ nutritional status.

What they do

Patient Care: They provide direct patient care, focusing on the specific nutritional needs of individuals who cannot receive adequate nourishment orally.

Treatment Design: Nutrition support pharmacists design and modify individualized nutrition plans, incorporating both macronutrients (like amino acids, dextrose, and fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and electrolytes).

Preparation: They prepare complex parenteral and enteral nutrition formulations, ensuring the products are sterile, stable, and compatible for safe administration.

Monitoring: They monitor a patient’s nutritional status and response to therapy, often through daily and regular laboratory tests, and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

Preventing Complications: They work to prevent complications associated with nutrition support, such as fluid imbalances or nutrient deficiencies, by closely managing IV fluids and monitoring patient progress.

Team Collaboration: They are active members of multidisciplinary nutrition support teams, working alongside other healthcare professionals, patients, and their caregivers to optimize care.

Education: They educate healthcare professionals, students, patients, and caregivers about specialized nutrition support, including the management of oral medications during nutrition therapy.

Program Management: Many nutrition support pharmacists are involved in managing their institution’s nutrition support program, leading quality improvement initiatives, and participating in research activities.
