What do Intermediate Emergency Medical Technicians do?
An Intermediate Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Intermediate or AEMT) provides limited advanced care beyond basic EMT skills, including administering IV fluids, performing advanced airway management, and administering a wider range of medications.
They act as a bridge between EMTs and paramedics, enabling more advanced prehospital care by providing services such as advanced cardiac monitoring, manual defibrillation, and specific invasive procedures under the direction of a medical professional.
What they do
Advanced Airway Management: Can insert multi-lumen airways, and in some states, perform endotracheal intubation.
Intravenous (IV) Therapy: Can establish and manage IV access for fluid administration.
Medication Administration: Can administer a broader range of medications than an EMT-Basic, including D5W, Narcan, and other approved drugs, according to state protocols.
Advanced Cardiac Monitoring: Can utilize 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs) and perform transcutaneous pacing and manual defibrillation.
Advanced Assessment: Possess enhanced assessment skills to diagnose better and treat patients.
Role
State-Specific Scope: Their scope of practice varies significantly by state, and they must comply with each state’s regulations.
