What do Biomedical Engineering Technicians do?

Biomedical Engineering Technicians (BMETs) install, maintain, calibrate, and repair medical equipment to ensure its safety and proper functioning in healthcare settings.

Their duties include performing routine safety and performance inspections, responding to equipment malfunctions, maintaining records of maintenance, and instructing medical staff on the safe operation of devices.

BMETs, or biomedical equipment technicians, are the “doctors” of medical equipment, focusing on the electromechanical maintenance of machines such as ventilators, defibrillators, and patient monitors to support patient care and hospital operations.

Responsibilities

Installation: Setting up new or repaired medical equipment for use.

Maintenance: Performing regular inspections, preventative maintenance, and calibrations to ensure equipment is in good working order and meets safety standards.

Repair: Diagnosing and fixing equipment malfunctions to restore functionality.

Testing: Using simulators or other tools to test equipment and confirm accuracy.

Record Keeping: Maintaining detailed records of maintenance, repairs, and inspections.

Instruction: Training and advising hospital staff on the safe and proper use of medical equipment.

Safety: Conducting safety inspections and addressing hazard alerts and recalls.

Inventory Management: Keeping track of equipment inventory.

What they need to know

This role requires a blend of engineering and biological knowledge, along with strong communication and organizational skills, to explain technical information to medical staff.

They must be proficient in understanding the operation of complex medical devices to ensure they are safe and effective for patient use.

Environment

BMETs work in various healthcare environments, including Hospitals, Clinics, Veterinary and dental offices, Medical equipment companies, and the military.
